The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is the best one-day trek in New Zealand. It is 19.4 km (12 mile) through volcanic alpine terrain. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is located in the Tongariro National Park - New Zealand's oldest national park and a dual UNESCO World Heritage Site. Come and see for yourself the famous Red Crater, Emerald lakes and dramatic landscape. Tongariro Expeditions offer return transport to and from your accommodation in Taupo (as long as it is in the town centre). Weather updates are sent to you prior to your day and in the morning you receive a map and information sheet.

Full Description

Park on SH46 near the entrace to Ketetahi car park. Use the links on our website. Park on the side of the road, it is free and safe to park there all day. Tongariro Expeditions will pick up from there. When you see our bus that is white with black boot prints go over to the driver and check in. You will then be taken to the start of the track at Mangatepopo car park. This shuttle ride takes 30 mins. You then hike the track 6-8 hours. When you finish you walk out to your car on the main road and go. No waiting for a bus! Great option!

IMPORTANT TO NOTE To ensure your trip runs smoothly: Please be fully prepared for the alpine environment and weather as we no longer have hire equipment Make sure you park in the signposted parking sections on the side of the road when parking on SH46. Do not park in between the no parking signs It is important to use our link to map location for the Ketetahi area of SH46 on our website as some GPS devices send people to the wrong spot. Know where you are going before you head off as coverage can be low in the Ketetahi area. Make sure you have told someone where you are going and when to expect you back. Please carry a fully charged phone that you are not using to take photos.

Ketetahi Park N' Ride (One Way Morning Shuttle)

One way transport available from the Ketetahi end of the track to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. You park your car at the Ketetahi Park N' Ride (map to get there) situated on State Highway 46. Simply park your car on the side of the road where there is no parking restriction then walk to our check in van.

Yes, beyond the one-way Ketetahi shuttle, Tongariro Expeditions offers return shuttle services from several pick-up locations, including Taupō, Turangi, and the Tongariro Holiday Park.

No,  there are no planned stops or sightseeing detours along the shuttle route. The shuttle serves purely as transport between designated pick-up points and trailheads.

How early should I arrive to catch the shuttle?

Plan to arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled shuttle departure time. This allows for parking, gathering any gear, and checking in with the shuttle staff.

Is the shuttle service available year-round?

Shuttles operate in the hiking season, typically from October through May, weather permitting. During off-season or poor weather conditions, services may be suspended or subject to weather delays.

Can I bring hiking gear and backpacks on the shuttle?

Yes, backpacks and hiking gear are allowed onboard.
