Jump on a bike and our guide will show you around the Wellington Waterfront and introduce you to some fascinating past and present figures who have made Wellington the creative capital it is today. This tour is perfect for those with just a couple of hours to spare or who prefer to ride only on cycle paths. Our Introduction to Wellington tour is set at an easy pace with plenty of time for questions and taking photos at each of the tour stops. Our tour focuses on six city-shaping people, and we’ll introduce you to some key Wellington landmarks, including the New Zealand Parliament, Wellington Stadium, Te Papa Museum, Cuba St, Oriental Bay, Wellington Railway Station, and the historic Wellington Waterfront. We use regular bikes for this tour as it's mostly flat, but you can upgrade to an electric bike if you like.

The hills around Wellington offer a spectacular backdrop for a cycling tour and you don’t need to worry about biking uphill! Our Electric Bays Tour makes riding a breeze, so you can concentrate on admiring the scenery.

Wellington is surrounded by beautiful hills and a stunning harbour. Our eBike Guided Tour introduces you to Wellington and shows off many of its natural gems. Our modern electric bikes take the hard work out of the hills and any wind along the way. Throughout a 25km ride, your local guide will share insights into Wellington's vibrant city and rich culture.Meet your guide at our store on Queens Wharf in central Wellington in time for a 10:00am departure. After listening to the safety briefing, learn how to operate your electric bike, and enjoy time to practice in a car-free space before heading out.

Once you’re comfortable, saddle up for a fun bike tour of Wellington's bays and follow your guide along the Wellington Waterfront. Glide along the seafront, passing the lively harbour and the beaches of Oriental Bay - filled with swimmers and sun-bathers in the summer. Continue along the Miramar Peninsula and leave the bustle of the city behind as you cycle along the scenic coast. Pause along the way at a local café before looping back towards the city.

Finally, set the bikes to 'turbo' to climb up to the lookout point for an unforgettable view over Wellington, the Miramar Peninsula, and the ocean harbour entrance.

The tour is light hearted and fun. We've been running these tours for nearly seven years and they are consistently one of the top rated tour on Trip Advisor in Wellington.

We use modern Bosch and Shimano 'pedal assist' electric bikes - you pedal and the bikes smoothly 'amplify' your own effort up to 275% (our bikes are not throttle activated). You can choose the level of assistance that suits you - strong riders only use the assistance sometimes and occasional riders keep the power level up high! This means that the group is able to mostly ride at the same speed. The bikes have more than enough battery to ride the whole way on full power.

Your tour ends by 2:00pm (if 10:00am departure time) back at Switched on Bikes in Central Wellington.

Arriving by Cruise ShipOur tours are very popular with cruise ship passengers who are a little active and like the outdoors! If you're arriving by cruise ship into Wellington it's easy to get to our shop:

Please take the free port operated shuttle bus into the city and get off at Shuttle Stop 1 at Brandon Street. From there walk down Brandon St to the Wellington Waterfront. Turn right and follow the waters edge until you see our signs - we're right beside Dockside Restaurant and Fergs Kayaks. You can find a map under 'Contact' on our website or just put Switched on Bikes into Google Maps - we're about a 6 min walk from the shuttle stop.

*Riders must be 145cm tall (4'8). Riders of this height will just be able to touch their toes to the ground*Minimum age 13 years, must be accompanied by an adult if under 18.

*For pricing purposes, 'Teenage' is 13 - 17 years old and accompanied by an adult.

*Don't need to be an expert, but must be comfortable riding a bike.

*This route uses shared paths, on-road cycle ways and regular roads.

*A moderate level of fitness is recommended.

*This tour requires a minimum of two people to operate - we'll get in contact prior if we don't reach 2 riders.

Mt Victoria is only a 10min ride from our store and has a selection of Mountain Bike Trails. It has an easy (but steep) access trail to ride to the lookout and a whole bunch of harder rides. If you're an advanced rider you'll love it...or if you're fit and just want to get up to the lookout this is for you.

Waimapahi Polhill Reserve is only a 15min ride from our store and if you climb to the top you can visit Wellington's iconic Brooklyn Hill wind turbine and lookout. Waimapahi has a bigger range for range of trails and there is more options for fit beginners and intermediate riders. There is also some great downhill only runs for expert riders.

Makara Peak is further away but you can ride there from our shop. You can also take a public bus, by putting your bike on the front and getting off at South Karori Rd. Once there you are rewarded with Wellington's biggest selection of mountain biking trails!

Miramar hosts some great (although short) downhill trails- it's a scenic ride from our store around the bays to get to the top. You will also drop into Wellington's film making suburb!

Riding to Red Rocks is a scenic and easy journey. It's flat on-road riding around the bays, then you ride a rough beach road to experience Wellington's rugged southern coast. You might be lucky enough to see seals lounging on the rocks (mostly in the winter)...and the rocks are indeed red!

We're centrally located with only a 10min walk from the Wellington iSite (visitor's information center) and 10 min from Te Papa Museum (NZ's national Museum).

Included is a helmet and a lock. We have a large car-free space to get your riding and provide a full safety briefing before your set out.
