We can recommend a great half-day route that takes you from our store on the Wellington Waterfront, around the bays to the Miramar Peninsula and back via a lookout of the harbour entrance and Mt Victoria lookout. We have a recommended cafe stop (a local's secret!) with fun atmosphere, outdoor spaces and one of the best views you'll find.

If you'd like to take in the best visitor attractions of Wellington while riding, we recommend upgrading to a full-day hire so you have the time to visit attractions such as Zealandia Sanctuary, Te Papa Museum and Weta Workshop- your eBikes will become your mode of transport as well as your activity!

We're centrally located only a 10min walk from the Wellington iSite (visitor's information center) and 10 min from Te Papa Museum (NZ's national Museum).

Our bikes are suitable for rides from 145cm (4'8) tall. We have a variety of bikes to suit your preference. You will be provided with riding instructions, a helmet, a lock and a cycle map of the city, including our top picks of places to stop on your ride. We have a large car-free space to get your riding and provide a full briefing of how the bikes work- they're easy!

Shorter Ride- Wellington Bays and Chocolate Fish Cafe

Ride Wellington's beautiful coastline to arrive at one of our city's favourite cafes in an outstanding nature-surrounded location. With stunning views, landmarks, history and nature- this is our most popular half-day experience. There are lots of extras and side trips you can add to this route, or keep it easy!

Time: 2-3 hours including stops. 1-1.5 hours ride time.

What to Bring: Water bottle, sunscreen, extra layer of clothing.

Distance: 20km return

Difficulty: Easy on/off-road riding with hills only if you want them. Wind can be strong at times.

Longer Ride – Wellington Bays and Maupuia Lookout

Take in the coast, the cafe and the gorgeous hills of Miramar.An extension to the aboveride. This includes an extra loop with postcard views and a stunning lookout. Ride the coast, visit one of our city’s favorite cafes in an outstanding nature-surrounded location. Then experience the freedom of eBikes on the way up to the lookout.

Who: Those wanting to try some hills (great on ebikes!) and to catch some outstanding views.

Difficulty: Road riding on quiet streets and some decent climbing.

Or go even further: Take a full-day hireand carry on around the south coast of Wellington along more beautiful coastal road. Spend time at Weta Cave checking out Wellington’s movie industry, take in some of the craft breweries in that part of town, or find the seals at the rugged and remote Red Rocks beach.

To get even further from town, think about hopping on the ferry across the harbour to Days Bay and Pencarrow Lighthouse Trail - a gorgeous coastal trail through the harbour mouth via a beautiful seaside village.

Get remote on this gorgeous coastal trail just a short ferry ride from our shop, via a beautiful seaside village.

Where: Ferry across the harbor from right next to our shop, ride down the coast on easy roads and seaside trail.

Time: 2-4hours of ridingtimedepending on how much you explore. Allow a whole day including ferry rides, exploring and cafe stops!

Who: Riders looking for an accessible out of town bike adventure.

Difficulty: Easy road riding, cars present but no busy intersections. Flat and wide gravel road with loose gravel, some potholes. Option to continue on rougher surfaces and/or grade 3 mountain biking beyond the lighthouse. Exposed to the wind – eBike will help a lot!

*We run this tour on regular bikes as it's flat and easy riding, if you prefer electric riding just let us know when you book - there's no extra charge.*The minimum height for an electric bike is 145cm, there is no minimum height for a regular bike.*No minimum age but the tour's content is aimed at adults, children must be accompanied by an adult.*The riding is easy but you should be stable riding a bike, comfortable getting on and off to walk across roads and be able to safely ride between pedestrians while on shared paths.

Wellington is surrounded by beautiful hills and a stunning harbour. Our eBike Guided Tour introduces you to Wellington and shows off many of its natural gems. Our modern electric bikes take the hard work out of the hills and any wind along the way. Throughout a 25km ride, your local guide will share insights into Wellington's vibrant city and rich culture.Meet your guide at our store on Queens Wharf in central Wellington in time for a 10:00am departure. After listening to the safety briefing, learn how to operate your electric bike, and enjoy time to practice in a car-free space before heading out.

Once you’re comfortable, saddle up for a fun bike tour of Wellington's bays and follow your guide along the Wellington Waterfront. Glide along the seafront, passing the lively harbour and the beaches of Oriental Bay - filled with swimmers and sun-bathers in the summer. Continue along the Miramar Peninsula and leave the bustle of the city behind as you cycle along the scenic coast. Pause along the way at a local café before looping back towards the city.

Finally, set the bikes to 'turbo' to climb up to the lookout point for an unforgettable view over Wellington, the Miramar Peninsula, and the ocean harbour entrance.

The tour is light hearted and fun. We've been running these tours for nearly seven years and they are consistently one of the top rated tour on Trip Advisor in Wellington.

We use modern Bosch and Shimano 'pedal assist' electric bikes - you pedal and the bikes smoothly 'amplify' your own effort up to 275% (our bikes are not throttle activated). You can choose the level of assistance that suits you - strong riders only use the assistance sometimes and occasional riders keep the power level up high! This means that the group is able to mostly ride at the same speed. The bikes have more than enough battery to ride the whole way on full power.

Your tour ends by 2:00pm (if 10:00am departure time) back at Switched on Bikes in Central Wellington.

Arriving by Cruise ShipOur tours are very popular with cruise ship passengers who are a little active and like the outdoors! If you're arriving by cruise ship into Wellington it's easy to get to our shop:

Please take the free port operated shuttle bus into the city and get off at Shuttle Stop 1 at Brandon Street. From there walk down Brandon St to the Wellington Waterfront. Turn right and follow the waters edge until you see our signs - we're right beside Dockside Restaurant and Fergs Kayaks. You can find a map under 'Contact' on our website or just put Switched on Bikes into Google Maps - we're about a 6 min walk from the shuttle stop.

Waimapahi Polhill Reserve is only a 15min ride from our store and if you climb to the top you can visit Wellington's iconic Brooklyn Hill wind turbine and lookout. Waimapahi has a bigger range for range of trails and there is more options for fit beginners and intermediate riders. There is also some great downhill only runs for expert riders.

Makara Peak is further away but you can ride there from our shop. You can also take a public bus, by putting your bike on the front and getting off at South Karori Rd. Once there you are rewarded with Wellington's biggest selection of mountain biking trails!

Miramar hosts some great (although short) downhill trails- it's a scenic ride from our store around the bays to get to the top. You will also drop into Wellington's film making suburb!

Explore Wellington City, ride the bays or enjoy the local MTB trails at Mt Victoria, Waimapihi Polhill Reserve and Makara Peak MTB park. If you're doing serious mountain biking, we recommend hiring our full-suspension mountain bikes instead of the hardtails.

Ride at your own pace by hiring a hard-tail Mountain Bike to explore Wellington city and the surrounding bays or hit the trails. Our Mountain Bikes are high quality and well maintained with hydraulic disc brakes.

Matairangi Mt Victoria is only a 10min ride from our store and has a selection of Mountain Bike Trails. It has easy (but steep) access trails to ride to the lookout and a whole bunch of harder rides. If you're an advanced rider you'll love it...or if you're fit and just want to get up to the lookout this is for you.

Waimapihi Polhill Reserve is only a 15min ride from our store and if you climb to the top you can visit Wellington's iconic Brooklyn Hill wind turbine and lookout. Polhill has a bigger range for range of trails and there is more options for fit beginners and intermediate riders. There is also some great downhill only runs for expert riders.

Makara Peak is further away but if you're fit you can ride there from our shop. A quicker way to get up to the access carpark is by taking a public bus, putting your bike on the front and getting off at South Karori Rd. Once there you are rewarded with Wellington's biggest selection of mountain biking trails!

Miramar hosts some great (although short) downhill trails- it's a scenic ride from our store around the bays to get to the top. You will also drop into Wellington's film making suburb!

Riding to Red Rocks is a scenic and easy journey. It's flat on-road riding around the bays, then you ride a rough beach road to experience Wellington's rugged southern coast. You might be lucky enough to see seals lounging on the rocks (mostly in the winter)...and the rocks are indeed red!

If you're using the bikes for sight-seeing, we can recommend a great day route that takes you from our store on the Wellington Waterfront and around the bays to the Miramar Peninsula, around past Scorching Bay and Seatoun and out to the South Coast and back through Island Bay. We have a couple of recommended cafe stops for your along the way.

You'll have time to visit the main attractions in Wellington while riding- Weta Workshop, Te Papa Museum, The Cable Car, Cuba St and Zealandia- your bike can be your mode of transport as well as your activity!

We're centrally located with only a 10min walk from the Wellington iSite (visitor's information center) and 10 min from Te Papa Museum (NZ's national Museum).

Included is a helmet, lock and a cycle map of the city, including our top picks of places to stop on your ride. If you're mountain biking we'll give you a spares kit. We have a large car-free space to get your riding and provide a full safety briefing before your set out.
